Context

Urban Design Studio-Lab (2015)

This project proposes to orient Kuujjuaq’s future residential development along its main street, on vacant lots and overlooked rock outcrops, with the inclusion of modest yet convivial meeting spaces.

The strategic redesign of parts of the main street aims to secure and encourage pedestrian mobility, calm vehicular traffic, and make the street a lively place. The orientation and form of new dwellings and service buildings (with many on piles) creates comfortable “in between” spaces or backyards for traditional activities or storage, in summer and winter. Shared courtyards inside the housing blocks, with workshops, sheds, play areas and paths, encourage a community lifestyle and solidarity.
