Thesis Project (2022)

Tunummut Takusagiarlutit is a design-research project tackling three issues influencing the resilience of Nunavik’s villages and community living: coastal hazards, rapid urbanization and energy inefficiency.

The exploration for Salluit illustrates strategies for coastal protection that are in harmony with ecosystems and community life. To that end, it explores possibilities of sharing or mutualizing facilities and spaces within the village while devising shoreline adaptations. In Kangirsuk, the proposition emphasizes self-sufficiency and autonomy by way of alternative housing strategies (types, tenures) to meet with the growing demand. In parallel, it revisits the conditions for living together in a culturally adapted residential environment. Finally, the scenario for Kangiqsualujjuaq explores optimization and comfort by revisiting building implementations and village form. It explores the relationships between the built environment, community space and Inuit values to improve energy efficiency and thermal comfort, and to support traditional activities in all seasons.
